The Webster Technique in Barrington NH

low back pain relief with chiropractic care

The physical stress of pregnancy can lead to a great deal of discomfort. It's common for women to visit a chiropractic office in Barrington NH regularly for low back pain, as well as other related issues, such as sciatica, pubic symphysis dysfunction, and round ligament pain. This can lead to difficulty performing daily tasks as well as difficulties in labor. If a previous issue exists with the alignment of the spine, and there has been a history of lower back problems, pregnancy will often aggravate the condition.

Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy in Barrington NH

During pregnancy, a woman’s body is undergoing a number of different changes to accommodate the growing baby. As the baby grows, a mother’s center of gravity shifts to the front of her pelvis, resulting in added stress and discomfort in the lower back and pelvis. At the peak of pregnancy, the curve in the lower back can increase to the point of causing serious impact on the vertebral joints, the sacrum, and the hip joints.

Pregnancy Pelvic Movement Chart

Chiropractic treatment for pregnancy can be an outstanding source of relief for back pain, pelvic pain, symphysis pubis dysfunction, and allow a breech baby to turn into a head-down position for birth.

Many women also comment that the birthing process was easier after having undergone chiropractic treatments.

What is The Webster Technique?

The Webster technique is a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment with pregnancy in mind. The goal of the adjustment is to reduce the effects of spinal misalignments and joint dysfunction during pregnancy.

Dr. David Rivera is certified in the Webster Technique and completed the certification program in Perinatal Chiropractic through the ICPA (International Chiropractic Pediatric Association).

The Webster Technique primarily addresses the following structures:

The Pelvis & Sacrum

During pregnancy, a woman can gain 25-55 pounds. This pushes the pelvis out, increasing the curvature of the lower back, and causing tension in the muscles, tendons, and ligaments.

The Psoas Muscle

When tight or injured, we experience low back pain, sciatica, disc problems, hip degeneration, knee, and pelvic pain. Maintaining a healthy psoas reduces low back pain, opens and centers the pelvis and hips, which ultimately can support fetal positioning and descent of baby.

The Sacrotuberous Ligament

Tension in the sacrotuberous ligaments hinders pelvic mobility, causes misalignment of the pelvis, sacrum, or coccyx & may result in tension in the pelvic floor muscles, hamstrings, or cause compression to the pudendal nerve. This results in less efficient vaginal childbirth, low back pain, or pelvic pain.

When flexible, the ligament makes way during the fetal ejection reflex when the sacrum shifts outwards making the path of the fetus more roomy for childbirth.

The Pubic Symphysis

When there’s a separation, or widening of the space between the pubic bones, it can come with a lot of pain. This can sometimes even reduce the room for the baby to engage for labor at the end of pregnancy.

The Round Ligament

The round ligaments are a pair of cordlike structures in the pelvis that help support the uterus by connecting the front of the uterus to the groin region, holding the uterus in place.

As baby grows in the womb, it stretches the uterus and the round ligaments, leading to tightening or spasm of the ligaments or irritation of nearby nerve fibers.
